How to Use a Hop up Platform: A Guide

A hop-up platform is a handy tool to assist tasks that require a little bit of extra height, whether that be painting, decorating, or general maintenance around the house. However, as with any other work-at-height equipment, it is absolutely essential that you know the proper usage and safety precautions prior to use, and this is where we’re here to help!

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about using a hop up platform safely, and we also run through 5 of the best hop up platforms on the market with budget and quality in mind.
But first things first…

What Actually is a Hop Up Platform?

In short, hop up platforms, also known as step platforms, are small, portable platforms, designed to provide a stable elevated surface for working at low heights, without the need for a ladder.

Due to their handy height, they’re particularly popular with plasterers and decorators who require access to areas half a metre high, and are even versatile enough to be used on the stairway. They also feature a broad base and splayed legs to ensure a secure base to work from – so you don’t have to worry about balance.

At Ladders4sale, we offer a wide range of fibreglass and aluminium hop up platforms in various sizes and heights, ideal for professional, trade, and DIY use. And if you need some extra assistance choosing the right one, give us a call on 01639 849847.

How to Use a Hop up Platform: 5 Steps

Hop up work platforms are easy and safe to use, as long as the proper steps are followed before, during and after use.

Here are 5 simple steps to safely use a hop up platform:

  • Inspect it thoroughly – Firstly, as with any form of ladder, you’ll need to inspect it before use to make sure there are no damages, cracks, or loose parts that could compromise safety. You’ll also need to check that the non-slip surface is clean and intact to prevent accidental slips…ironic, right?
  • Place on a flat, stable surface – Once you’ve given it the all-clear, place it on a stable, level surface. If you’re using it outdoors, check for any slopes or loose gravel that could affect stability, as well as slippery surfaces from weather.
  • Ensure the legs are locked open – Before stepping onto the surface, ensure the safety latches or locking mechanisms are engaged to prevent accidental collapse. Most quality hop up platforms should have this safety feature.
  • Maintain balance – Once you step onto the platform, be sure to stand with both feet firmly planted and avoid standing on the edges, otherwise this could lead to the platform tipping over. If necessary, you could even hold onto a stable support while stepping up for that extra bit of balance.
  • Avoid overreaching – When using the platform to reach higher surfaces, avoid overreaching or leaning too far in any direction, as you’re likely to either lose balance or tip the platform over.

If you find that hop up platforms aren’t quite giving you the height required, and you need to overreach, another product, like a stepladder, should be used instead.

Can I Use a Hop-up Platform on a Scaffold?

When it comes to using a hop up platform, or any other working at height platform for that matter, on a scaffold, it is generally best to avoid this, due to significant safety concerns.

That said, if it’s absolutely necessary, there are some precautions that must be taken to reduce risks. If the platforms are used at least 2m away from any leading edge while on the scaffold, then no controls would be necessary, otherwise a third hand rail might need to be installed on any leading edge within the 2m zone.
