How Do Loft Ladders Work?

In this guide, we share the different types of loft ladders and how each one works.

Sliding Loft Ladders

Sliding loft ladders consist of two or three sections. The top section is secured to the loft hatch, while the bottom section slides up and down as required. This is similar to how a traditional extension ladder works.

This is made possible with a twist catch in the hatch—often opened with a key pole as loft ladders tend to be independent of the loft hatch trapdoor, which is used to pull the bottom section down into position. Locking pins or latches secure each section in place.

It closes by sliding the bottom section back up and fastening the hatch shut with that key pole. In other words, push the ladder upward until the catches re-engage, and fasten shut with the key pole. Most sliding loft ladders have spring-loaded catches (spring assistance) for a smoother transition between open and closed positions.

The bottom, sliding section of the ladder lies flat on the loft floor, so there will need to be significant space in the loft to accommodate this.

Concertina (Folding) Loft Ladders

Concertina loft ladders have multiple sections (3-4+) which fold in on themselves. Like a sliding loft ladder, once the hatch is opened with the key pole, you can unfold it in its sections.

There is no risk of the ladder falling and hitting you as the springs prevent this. Instead, the ladder gently opens on release. It is also often not until you pull the ladder down yourself, that it touches the floor.

To close, you can push the ladder back up into the hatch – the springs absorb most of the weight here – and fasten it again with the key pole.

Concertina ladders sit directly on top of the loft hatch trapdoor when stowed, which means they require less vertical and horizontal clearance in your loft than sliding loft ladders. This is ideal for lofts with limited space around the loft hatch, such as if the loft is tight to a wall or another obstruction.

Telescopic Ladders

As their name suggests, telescopic loft ladders have vertically overlapping sections which take up very little space. They open up step-by-step due to the telescopic segments that can be locked into place when extended. Telescopic ladders are designed for small loft hatches with minimal storage space in the loft.

As a bonus, telescopic loft ladders are easy to install and operate, with no cutting required. Read our full guide on How to Fit a Loft Ladder for more information.

Electric Loft Ladders

Electric ladders have a motor — powered by the mains or rechargeable batteries — which release and extend at the push of a remote button. The steps lock into place once fully deployed. To retract, the button (“close”) is pressed again, which ascends and seals the hatch.

There will be safety sensors to prevent accidents during movement, This is ideal for users with mobility issues, who might otherwise struggle with the opening and closing of a non-motorized ladder.

No matter which type of loft ladder you choose, safety should always come first. Look for non-slip treads, sturdy handrails, secure locking mechanisms and a suitable load capacity to keep you safe.
